Questions sellers ask

PayPal fees in Australia, answered

How much does PayPal charge to receive a payment in Australia?

Commercial transactions to an Australian account cost 2.9% + A$0.30. On a A$75.00 payment that is A$2.18 plus A$0.30, A$2.48 in all (3.3%), so you keep A$72.52. The fixed fee is for payments received in Australian dollars.

What does PayPal charge on an international payment to Australia?

PayPal adds 1% to the percent fee when the payer is in another country, whichever country it is. On A$75.00 the fee becomes A$3.23 and you keep A$71.77, against A$2.48 and A$72.52 from an Australian payer.

Is there a currency conversion fee on PayPal in Australia?

When a payment needs converting, PayPal applies a spread of 3% to 4% above its base exchange rate, depending on the transaction. On A$75.00 that would be about A$2.25 to A$3.00. It is a spread, not a fixed fee, and PayPal can disclose a different amount at the time, so we do not calculate it. A payer who pays in Australian dollars avoids it.

Are these PayPal Australia fees current for 2026?

This page reads PayPal's Australian merchant fee page, which PayPal last updated on 13 Oct 2026. We checked it on 19 Oct 2026. The standard rate is 2.9% + A$0.30, and we recheck it whenever PayPal changes the page.

Are PayPal friends and family payments free in Australia?

Sending to friends and family inside Australia is free when you fund it from a balance or bank account, and 2.6% when funded by card. Sending abroad costs 5% (0.99 to 5.99 AUD). These are personal payments, not sales, so they are not in the calculator.

Why are QR code and Pay Later payments missing for Australia?

PayPal lists a percent rate for QR code payments in Australia but states no fixed fee, so we cannot work out the fee to the cent and leave it out. We only offer a payment type when the page gives both numbers.

Why do small PayPal payments cost more in Australia?

The A$0.30 fixed fee does not shrink with the payment. On A$5.00 PayPal takes A$0.45, which is 9%, against 3.3% on A$75.00.

How much should I ask for to receive an exact amount in Australia?

Switch the calculator to "Find price" and enter the amount you want to receive. It solves for the payment to request after the percent fee, the A$0.30 fixed fee and any international surcharge you switch on.

How we checked every number

Every number on this page comes from one data file, checked against PayPal's own Australia fee pages on 19 Oct 2026. The calculator, the worked example, the tables and the FAQ all read from it, so they cannot disagree.

The Australia fixed fee applies to payments received in AUD. Currency conversion is a spread above PayPal's base rate (3% to 4%), so it is described here and not calculated. Where PayPal did not state a rate or a fixed fee, we left the option out instead of guessing.

What we could not confirm or do not model

  • Australia QR code payments are listed at 1.2% with no fixed fee stated, so they are not offered.
  • Fixed fees depend on the currency received. Only the fixed fee in your market's own currency is used, so a payer who pays in another currency is not modelled.
  • Currency conversion is a spread above PayPal's base exchange rate: 3% in the UK, 3% or 4% depending on the transaction in the US, Canada and Australia. PayPal may disclose a different amount at the time. It is not a fixed fee, so it is not calculated.
  • The international surcharge is added to the domestic percent for every payment type. The US page names commercial, invoicing and micropayment receipts, so treat it as an estimate for QR.
  • PayPal says rates can differ from the page as disclosed during the transaction.
  • Friends and family sends are personal payments, not sales, and are listed in the FAQ only. The Canada consumer page may be out of date.
