Full walkthrough

PayPal takes a percent of the amount the payer sends, plus a fixed fee for each payment. In Canada the checkout rate is 2.9% + C$0.30. Each fee is rounded to the cent on its own.

Here is one payment from the calculator above, worked through. A payer sends C$70.00 with PayPal checkout to a Canada account. All amounts are in CAD.

  • Buyer paysC$70.00
  • Percent fee2.9% of C$70.00-C$2.03
  • Fixed feeC$0.30 on each payment received in CAD-C$0.30
  • You keepC$67.67

PayPal took C$2.33 in fees, which is 3.3% of the payment. If the payer were abroad, the surcharge would add C$0.70 at the highest rate and you would keep C$66.97.

Questions sellers ask

PayPal fees in Canada, answered

How much does PayPal charge to receive a payment in Canada?

Commercial transactions to a Canadian account cost 2.9% + C$0.30. On a C$70.00 payment that is C$2.03 plus C$0.30, C$2.33 in all (3.3%), so you keep C$67.67. The fixed fee is for payments received in Canadian dollars.

What does PayPal charge on a payment from the US to Canada?

PayPal adds 0.8% to the percent fee when the payer is in the US and 1% when the payer is anywhere else. On C$70.00 from a US payer the fee is C$2.89 and you keep C$67.11. From a payer elsewhere it is C$3.03 and you keep C$66.97. A Canadian payer costs C$2.33.

What does it cost to send money from Canada to the US with PayPal?

For a sale, the Canadian seller pays the fee when the money arrives, as in the answer above. Sending a personal payment from Canada is a separate charge: Flat 2.99 CAD (Europe, US) or 4.99 CAD (elsewhere). PayPal's Canada consumer page may be out of date, so check it before you send. Sending payments is not in the calculator.

Is there a currency conversion fee on PayPal in Canada?

When a payment needs converting, PayPal applies a spread of 3% to 4% above its base exchange rate, depending on the transaction. On C$70.00 that would be about C$2.10 to C$2.80. It is a spread, not a fixed fee, and PayPal can disclose a different amount at the time, so we do not calculate it. A US payer who pays in US dollars into a Canadian dollar balance meets it.

What do PayPal QR code payments cost in Canada?

QR code payments cost 2.4% + C$0.05 up to C$10, 1.9% + C$0.10 above C$10. A payment of C$10.00 costs C$0.29 and one of C$10.01 costs C$0.29, because the rate changes above C$10.

Why is PayPal Pay Later missing for Canada?

PayPal lists a Pay Later rate in Canada, but the page only implies the fixed fee through its layout. We only offer a payment type when the page states both the percent and the fixed fee, so Pay Later is left out until PayPal confirms it.

Are PayPal friends and family payments free in Canada?

Sending to friends and family inside Canada is free when you fund it from a balance or bank account, and 2.9% when funded by card. These are personal payments, not sales, so they are not in the calculator.

Why do small PayPal payments cost more in Canada?

The C$0.30 fixed fee does not shrink with the payment. On C$5.00 PayPal takes C$0.45, which is 9%, against 3.3% on C$70.00. Use "Find price" to work out how much to request for an exact amount.

How we checked every number

Every number on this page comes from one data file, checked against PayPal's own Canada fee pages on 19 Oct 2026. The calculator, the worked example, the tables and the FAQ all read from it, so they cannot disagree.

The Canada fixed fee applies to payments received in CAD. Currency conversion is a spread above PayPal's base rate (3% to 4%), so it is described here and not calculated. Where PayPal did not state a rate or a fixed fee, we left the option out instead of guessing.

What we could not confirm or do not model

  • Canada Pay Later is listed at 4.9% but its fixed fee is only implied by the page layout, so it is not offered.
  • Fixed fees depend on the currency received. Only the fixed fee in your market's own currency is used, so a payer who pays in another currency is not modelled.
  • Currency conversion is a spread above PayPal's base exchange rate: 3% in the UK, 3% or 4% depending on the transaction in the US, Canada and Australia. PayPal may disclose a different amount at the time. It is not a fixed fee, so it is not calculated.
  • The international surcharge is added to the domestic percent for every payment type. The US page names commercial, invoicing and micropayment receipts, so treat it as an estimate for QR.
  • PayPal says rates can differ from the page as disclosed during the transaction.
  • Friends and family sends are personal payments, not sales, and are listed in the FAQ only. The Canada consumer page may be out of date.
