How Upwork fees work in 2026
Upwork sets your fee per contract, anywhere from 0% to 15%, and shows it on the proposal. Connects and withdrawal fees come on top of it.
- Contract value
- $1,000.00
- Upwork fees
- -$100.9910.1% of the contract value
- Your costs
- -$2.40Connects and costs
- You keep
- $896.6189.66% margin
That is a $1,000 fixed-price contract with a 10% fee, which is only an example. Switch to hourly and 20 hours at $50 an hour gives the same total. The client pays up to $1,094.89, and that does not change what you earn.
Full walkthrough
Upwork takes its fee from what you bill, which includes bonuses and expenses. Connects, withdrawal fees and your own costs are separate lines.
Here is one contract from the calculator above, worked through. A freelancer bills a $1,000 fixed price, spends 16 Connects and withdraws to a local bank.
- Contract value$1,000.00
- Upwork service fee10% of the $1,000.00 you bill (the fee Upwork shows on your proposal)-$100.00
- Withdrawal feeDirect to local bank: $0.99 per withdrawal-$0.99
- Connects-$2.40
- You keep$896.61

Upwork fees, answered
How much does Upwork take from a freelancer?
Upwork's freelancer service fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract. At 10%, the calculator's example, a $1,000.00 fixed-price contract has a fee of $100.00 and you keep $900.00 before Connects and withdrawal.
How do I find out my Upwork fee?
Upwork shows the fee percentage on each proposal or offer, so you know it before you accept. Once the contract starts, the fee is fixed and does not change. You can also see it in your contract details and transaction summaries. Upwork publishes no formula, so enter the percentage it shows you.
What is the fee on Direct Contracts?
A Direct Contract is one you start with a client you bring to Upwork. You pay a flat 5%, or 0% if you are an active Freelancer Plus member. On the same $1,000.00 that is $50.00 of fees, or $0.00 with Freelancer Plus. Future contracts with that client must also go through Direct Contracts.
What does the client pay on top?
Clients on the Basic plan pay a client marketplace fee of up to 7.99%, or 3% for eligible U.S. clients who pay by bank account, plus a one-time contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99. On $1,000.00 the client pays up to $1,094.89 in total. None of this is deducted from you.
How much do Connects cost?
Connects cost $0.15 each. Upwork shows how many a job needs on the job post, and the number varies by job. Spending 16 Connects costs $2.40. Count the Connects you spend on proposals that do not win too.
What do Upwork withdrawal fees cost?
A withdrawal direct to a local bank costs $0.99. A transfer to a US bank is free with a US tax address, and $2.99 with a tax address outside the US since 1 September 2026. A USD wire costs $50.00. On the default contract you keep $896.61 by local bank, $897.60 by US bank with a US tax address, $894.61 with a tax address outside the US, or $847.60 by wire.
What about PayPal, Payoneer and Instant Pay fees?
Upwork charges a small fee per transfer for these and shows the amount only inside your account. Choose "PayPal, Payoneer or other" in the calculator and enter the fee you see. PayPal and Payoneer can add their own fees too.
What rate should I charge to take home a set hourly amount?
Divide by one minus your fee. At 10%, taking home $20 an hour means billing $22.22 an hour. Switch the calculator to "Find price" to include Connects, withdrawal fees and your costs as well.
Does the fee apply to bonuses and expenses?
Yes. Upwork says you pay the fee on all earnings, including bonuses. If money is refunded to the client, the fee on that money is refunded to you.
How long until I get paid?
Hourly work is billed each Monday for the week before, and after the review period a five-day security period applies. On fixed-price contracts the client has up to 14 days to review your work, then a five-day security hold applies. Withdrawal times then depend on the method.
What happened to the 20%, 10% and 5% tiers?
They are Upwork's legacy tiered pricing, which now applies only to older contracts where Upwork confirmed it in writing. New contracts use the variable 0% to 15% fee.

How we checked every number
Every number on this page comes from one data file, checked against Upwork's own help centre and its Fee and ACH Authorization Agreement on 20 Oct 2026. The calculator, the worked example, the tables and the FAQ all read from it, so they cannot disagree.
Fees are rounded to the cent one at a time. Where an Upwork page was unclear or we could not confirm a rate, we left the option out instead of guessing.
What we could not confirm or do not model
- Upwork sets your freelancer fee per contract with its own algorithm and publishes no formula. The calculator takes the percentage from you, and 10% is only an example.
- Upwork shows the fees for PayPal, Payoneer, Instant Pay and mobile wallet withdrawals only inside your account. Enter that fee in the Other option if you use one of them.
- The Freelancer Plus price and the Connects bundle sizes are shown only when you are logged in, so the calculator does not state them. Plus members pay 0% on Direct Contracts.
- Upwork's client marketplace fee is up to 7.99% and the exact rate is shown to the client at checkout. The 3% rate is for eligible U.S. clients who pay by bank account. Business Plus and Enterprise clients pay different fees.
- Currency conversion on withdrawals is done by Upwork's payment partners at their own rate, and Upwork publishes no percentage.
- Older contracts may still be on Upwork's legacy tiers of 20%, 10% and 5% where Upwork confirmed it in writing. The calculator does not model them.
