Full walkthrough

PayPal takes a percent of the amount the payer sends, plus a fixed fee for each payment. Each fee is rounded to the cent on its own.

Here is one payment from the calculator above, worked through. A payer sends $50.00 with PayPal checkout in the US.

  • Buyer pays$50.00
  • Percent fee3.49% of $50.00-$1.75
  • Fixed fee$0.49 on each payment received in USD-$0.49
  • You keep$47.76

PayPal took $2.24 in fees, which is 4.5% of the payment. If the payer were in another country, the surcharge would add $0.75 and you would keep $47.01.

Questions sellers ask

PayPal fees, answered

How much does PayPal take from a payment?

On a $50.00 payment with PayPal checkout in the US, PayPal's fee comes to $2.24 (4.5% of the payment). That is 3.49%, which is $1.75, plus a $0.49 fixed fee. A payer in another country adds a surcharge on top.

What are the PayPal fees in each market?

Standard checkout costs 3.49% + $0.49 in the US, 2.9% + £0.30 in the UK, 2.9% + C$0.30 in Canada and 2.9% + A$0.30 in Australia. Cards in the US cost 2.99% + $0.49. The fixed fee depends on the currency you receive.

What does an international payer cost?

PayPal adds a surcharge to the percent fee when the payer is in another country: +1.5% in the US, +1.29% from EEA, +1.99% elsewhere in the UK, +0.8% from US, +1% elsewhere in Canada and +1% in Australia. On $50.00 in the US that is $0.75 extra, so you keep $47.01. On the same payment in the UK it is £0.65 from the EEA and £1.00 elsewhere.

How much do QR code payments cost?

In the US they cost 2.29% + $0.09. The UK and Canada use two rates by amount: 2% + £0.05 up to £10, 1.5% + £0.10 above £10 in the UK and 2.4% + C$0.05 up to C$10, 1.9% + C$0.10 above C$10 in Canada. In the UK a QR payment of £10.00 costs £0.25 and one of £10.01 costs £0.25, because the rate changes above £10. Australia is not offered because PayPal shows no fixed fee for QR there.

Why do small payments cost more?

The fixed fee does not shrink with the payment. On a $5.00 US checkout payment PayPal takes $0.66, which is 13.2%, against 4.5% on $50.00. For small sales, check whether PayPal's micropayment rates, offered on application, fit you better.

Is currency conversion included?

No. When a payment involves a currency conversion, PayPal applies a spread above its base exchange rate: 3% to 4% in the US, 3% in the UK, 3% to 4% in Canada, 3% to 4% in Australia. It is a spread, not a fixed fee, and PayPal can disclose a different amount at the time, so we do not calculate it. Ask the payer to pay in your currency, or check the rate PayPal shows.

Are friends and family payments free?

Sending to family and friends in your own country is free when it is funded from a PayPal balance or bank account. In the US it is 2.9% when funded by card, and in Australia 2.6% when funded by card. International sends are 5% (0.99 to 4.99 USD) in the US and 5% (0.99 to 2.99 GBP) in the UK. These are personal payments, not sales, so they are not in the calculator.

Why is Goods and Services missing in the US?

PayPal lists Send/Receive Money for Goods and Services at 2.99% in the US but shows no fixed fee, so we cannot calculate it to the cent. We only offer payment types where the page gives both numbers.

How much should I request to receive a set amount?

Switch the calculator to "Find price", then set the profit you want to keep. It solves for the amount to request so that, after the percent fee, the fixed fee and any international surcharge, you are left with exactly that. Because the fee is a percent of the payment, the amount rises a little faster than your target.

How we checked every number

Every number on this page comes from one data file, checked against PayPal's own fee pages on 19 Oct 2026. The calculator, the worked example, the tables and the FAQ all read from it, so they cannot disagree.

Fees are rounded to the cent one at a time. Where PayPal did not state a rate or a fixed fee, we left the option out instead of guessing.

Currency conversion is a spread above PayPal's base rate (3% to 4% in the US, 3% in the UK, 3% to 4% in Canada, 3% to 4% in Australia), so it is described here and not calculated.

What we could not confirm or do not model

  • US Send/Receive Money for Goods and Services is listed at 2.99% with no fixed fee on the page, so it is not offered.
  • UK card payments from a payer without a PayPal account (1.2%) take their fixed fee from a different table and PayPal says to confirm it in your account, so it is not offered.
  • Canada Pay Later is listed at 4.9% but its fixed fee is only implied by the page layout, so it is not offered.
  • Australia QR code payments are listed at 1.2% with no fixed fee stated, so they are not offered.
  • The US QR fixed fee of 0.09 comes from the QR fixed-fee table and a third-party integrator line, not from the main rate row.
  • Fixed fees depend on the currency received. Only the fixed fee in your market's own currency is used, so a payer who pays in another currency is not modelled.
  • Currency conversion is a spread above PayPal's base exchange rate: 3% in the UK, 3% or 4% depending on the transaction in the US, Canada and Australia. PayPal may disclose a different amount at the time. It is not a fixed fee, so it is not calculated.
  • The optional UK tiered rate plan (2.9%, 2.4% or 2.1% by last month's volume, on request), micropayment rates (on application), Pay by Bank and invoice subscription fees, withdrawals and dispute fees are not modelled.
  • The international surcharge is added to the domestic percent for every payment type. The US page names commercial, invoicing and micropayment receipts, so treat it as an estimate for QR.
  • PayPal says rates can differ from the page as disclosed during the transaction.
  • Friends and family sends are personal payments, not sales, and are listed in the FAQ only. The Canada consumer page may be out of date.
