Carbylamine reaction

Aliphatic and aromatic primary amines on heating with chloroform and alcoholic KOH give isocyanides (carbylamines) with a foul smell.

Class 12, Chapter 9 Amines

  1. NH2
    EthanamineCH₃CH₂NH₂Amine
  2. Step 1

    CHCl₃ + alc. KOH, heat

    Carbylamine reaction
    i

Carbylamine reaction: only primary amines respond, and the isocyanide smells foul.

    N+C−
    Ethyl isocyanideCH₃CH₂NCCompound

Reagents: CHCl₃ + alc. KOH, heat

Mechanism

How it works

  1. Chloroform and base give dichlorocarbene.
  2. The amine nitrogen attacks the carbene.
  3. Elimination of HCl gives the isocyanide.
Used to prepare

What it makes

Isocyanides; also a test for primary amines.

Limitations

Where it fails

Secondary and tertiary amines do not respond.
