Peroxide effect (Kharasch)

In the presence of peroxides, HBr adds to an unsymmetrical alkene against Markovnikov's rule.

Class 11, Chapter 9 Hydrocarbons

  1. PropeneCH₃CH=CH₂Alkene
  2. Step 1

    HBr, peroxide

    Peroxide effect (Kharasch)
    i

Peroxide effect: only HBr gives anti-Markovnikov addition (free radical mechanism); HCl and HI do not.

    Br
    1-BromopropaneCH₃CH₂CH₂BrHaloalkane

Reagents: HBr, peroxide

Mechanism

How it works

  1. The peroxide gives a bromine radical from HBr.
  2. The radical adds to the carbon that gives the more stable secondary radical.
  3. The radical abstracts H from HBr to give the product and a new bromine radical.
Used to prepare

What it makes

The primary bromoalkane, for example 1-bromopropane from propene.

Limitations

Where it fails

Works only with HBr. HCl and HI do not show the peroxide effect.
